How our Woking
chess league works.

01 / JOIN

Pull up a chair.

Apply to join our target line-up of 10 or more members. You don't have to be a grandmaster—players of every ability are welcome.

02 / ARRANGE

Find your meeting spot.

Agree a mutually suitable time and location with your opponent around Woking. There’s no fixed venue or weekly club night.

03 / PLAY

Expect the unexpected.

Play after a few drinks, with five minutes per player. The clock adds pressure, the blunders add drama, and the results count towards the league. Everyone plays every other member twice: once as White and once as Black.

The first season starts here.

We’re aiming for 10+ members, with the first games planned for early 2027. Each member plays everyone else twice—one game with the white pieces and one with the black pieces.

After that, we hope to run two or three leagues each year. Exact dates and season lengths will be confirmed once we know who’s joining.

The house rules
